What Is CTET?

CTET is the Central Teacher Eligibility Test for candidates seeking teacher eligibility for Classes 1 to 8 in recruitments where CTET is accepted or required. CTET qualification does not by itself guarantee a teacher job.

How to Choose the Right CTET Paper: Decision Matrix

First identify which classes you wish to teach; then verify your specific qualification route. A target class range alone does not make you eligible.

Worked Candidate Scenarios (Illustrative, Not Eligibility Decisions)

Elementary teacher-training candidate targeting Classes 1–5: Paper 1 is the relevant examination to review. Confirm that the exact diploma or degree, academic record and institution meet currently applicable NCTE rules.
Graduate with B.Ed targeting Classes 6–8: Paper 2 is the relevant examination to review. Verify the qualification route and intended subject grouping. A B.Ed alone must not be assumed to establish eligibility for primary Classes 1–5.
Candidate interested in both primary and upper-primary vacancies: Compare their documents against each level’s separate requirements before choosing both papers; do not rely on a single general teaching qualification.
Candidate with academic qualifications but no qualifying teacher-training route: Do not infer eligibility from graduation or subject knowledge alone. First consult the current NCTE minimum qualifications and the authority’s recruitment rules.

CTET Is Eligibility, Not Appointment

Passing CTET can satisfy an eligibility condition in recruitments where it is accepted, but final teacher selection still depends on the recruiting organisation, vacancy, post-wise qualification, age, subject combination, documents and selection process.

Exam Pattern Direction

CTET generally uses multiple-choice questions. Paper structure, language options, marks, duration and instructions should be verified from the current official bulletin.

Paper 1: child development, two languages, mathematics and environmental studies.
Paper 2: child development, two languages and the selected subject group.

Verified 2026 bulletin example: CTET September 2026 specifies 150 one-mark multiple-choice questions for Paper 1, a two-and-a-half-hour duration and no negative marking. Always use the bulletin applicable to your own exam session instead of copying an older pattern automatically.

Paper 2 Subject and Language Selection: Practical Checks

Check which subject grouping your intended upper-primary vacancy accepts before choosing Paper 2 options; mathematics/science and social studies/social science are not interchangeable in all recruitments.
Choose Language I and Language II carefully. The September 2026 bulletin specifies that Language II must be different from Language I.
Check how your educational subjects appear on marksheets and whether your intended employer requires particular graduation subjects.
